Are you a good gardener? Experienced in growing fruit and vegetables? Used to working with groups or with young people? We need volunteers to help us get our new Go Green project “off the ground”!
Based at our town centre offices in Trinity Street, you will help us to transform part of our ‘secret’ garden into an allotment for growing food produce. You will be working with young people between 11-25 who have accessed or are currently accessing one of our services (counselling, homelessness or young parents). We want to involve the young people in every aspect of the garden; from planning to landscaping, seeding, weeding and growing. As the Go Green Mentor, not only will you be getting your own green fingers dirty, you will be on hand to guide the young people – encouraging them, teaching them gardening skills, imparting knowledge and injecting a bit of fun.
You will have support from the Volunteer Coordinator, case workers and management, but in the main we envisage the Go Green Mentors to take ownership of the plot and work together with the young people to mutually agreed goals.
Necessary skills or experience:
- Excellent gardening experience and skills
- Non-judgemental, positive, and friendly personality
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience of managing people and/or groups or teams
Desirable but not essential:
- Experience of working with young people
- Experience of planning & delivering projects
Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed. Training (except horticulture – this knowledge is assumed) and ongoing support and development is provided. A DBS check will be required at no cost to the volunteer. *A criminal record does not necessarily exclude individuals from volunteering at Y.E.S. but the nature, volume and time since the crime(s) will be taken into account and discussed at interview.
